Minshuku Nagi, a Seaside Inn in Tateyama

Fifteen minutes by car from Tateyama Station, the inn sits on a small hill where the only sound is the waves. There is no sign. It appears on no map. And yet regulars in the know have been returning to these four rooms for twenty years.

An Inn With No Sign

If a local fisherman hadn't told us, "That minshuku up there — it's a good one," we would probably never have found it. At the top of a gravel path stands a single-story house wrapped in hedges. Slide open the front door, and the okami (the innkeeper), Mrs. Tanaka, 68, appears with a warm "Irasshai" — welcome.

Born and raised in Tateyama, she opened this inn with her husband thirty years ago. Since losing him five years ago, she has kept it going on her own.

Morning-Caught Fish and Sunrise Over the Pacific

Dinner is local fish landed that very morning at Tateyama port. Horse mackerel, barracuda — only what came in that day, served as sashimi and simmered in soy. "Today's catch came from Ko-chan, a fisherman in the neighborhood," says Mrs. Tanaka.

At five in the morning, I slid open the shoji screens of the east-facing room to find dawn breaking over the Pacific. Cup of tea in hand, listening to the waves, I couldn't move for a while.

Reservations by Phone, and Phone Only

Nagi has no website and no social media. Reservations are made with a single phone call. "The internet? I never quite figured it out," Mrs. Tanaka laughs.

You won't find it on the major booking sites. Which is exactly why the only guests here are the ones who searched, found, and made their way to it. That is what gives this inn its air.
